Google his name and you will get seventeen million results. This, despite the fact that Edgar Cayce died—at the age of sixty-seven—almost seventy years ago. Do you start to get the picture?Despite this, no major stage play or feature film has ever been made about Cayce. The main reason seems to be that his life was so sprawling, with so many people entering and exiting it, that only a fraction of his life could possibly be filmed or staged, plus he was almost never in conflict with his society, though for much of his life society barely tolerated him, often ridiculed and dismissed his talents, and tried its best to use him for its financial advantage, behind his back. Almost seventy years after his death, some people are still trying to debunk him. Consequently, mainstream Hollywood and Broadway have tended to believe his life is not good material for stage or screen. So, what were Cayce’s talents? He would go into a self-induced trance, in which he had access to all knowledge, present and past. In this state, he was able to minutely—and correctly—diagnose anyone’s ailment, no matter where they lived. Much later, his ‘readings’ suddenly shifted their focus, giving information about people’s past lives. However, Cayce was not limited to these two areas of inquiry. As long as the request was honest and legitimate, he would give whatever was asked for, including information about the legendary lost continents of Atlantis and Mu, or details of a murder a thousand miles away.RELUCTANT PROPHET focuses narrowly on significant events in Edgar’s life in the early 1920s, when he was in his mid-forties, with incursions into his past prior to that time, through his memory. So, this is a memory play, somewhat like DEATH OF A SALESMAN, AFTER THE FALL, and THE GLASS MENAGERIE, but it is not presented as a linear trip through time. Rather, it is organized in clusters of synchronistic memories drawn into consciousness by the needs of the protagonist, in a serpentine construction. The structure of RELUCTANT PROPHET, consequently, is episodic but fluid, written to be performed on a stage bare of sets and costumes, flowing synchronistically from scene to scene, mostly ignoring the concept of linear time. In this way, the essences of Cayce’s life experiences are extracted, and the theater viewer has a clear picture of Cayce’s abilities, inner conflicts, doubts, outer challenges, and how he finally came to terms with his life path.RELUCTANT PROPHET is a triumphant walk through the mind and life of an extraordinary human being.
