Zimbabwe has endured decades of conflict and dictatorship, but behind this lies an unchanging world of the spirit. Animals and people may withdraw from view. They still “inhabit the small hours, spaces nothing else enters” and the rock paintings left by “men who vanish into the sand”. The final poems are a retelling of legends collected from the /xam Bushmen in the 19th century. Harold Farmer’s poetry has appeared in The Penguin Book of Southern African Verse, The Oxford Book of Animal Poems, and Out of the African Ark. He has also published in many magazines in Africa, Australia, Canada, England and the United States. He was a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University.
